The Hudson School Update – Search for a New Head of School

April 22, 2015

Dear Members of The Hudson School Community,

On behalf of the school’s Board of Trustees, please accept this letter as an introduction to the search process for The Hudson School’s next Head of School,  who will begin in the 2016-2017 school year.

As members of the Search Committee, we are honored to lead this important work and are committed to keeping the THS community informed and involved throughout the search process.  At this time, we want to summarize our progress so far and make you aware of upcoming opportunities for you to participate in the search process.

Over the past several weeks, we have interviewed and familiarized ourselves with several professional search consultancy firms from across the country.  After careful consideration, and with input from our faculty advisors, Ms. Dominguez and Mr. Gould, the board has retained Educators’ Collaborative (EC) to assist us in our search. EC has an excellent reputation in the independent school community.  Founded in 1971, it is one of the oldest firms in the search business and has conducted more than 350 head of school searches and an equal number of senior administrative searches.  The two EC partners with whom we will be working are Marcus Hurlbut and Jayne Geiger.  Both are very well-regarded educators and themselves former heads of school–Marcus at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in Southern California, Friends Academy in New York and The Derryfield School in New Hampshire; and Jayne at Far Hills Country Day School in New Jersey. Their extensive backgrounds both as educators and search professionals will be invaluable to us as we enter into the next phase of the search, which is to have them meet with members of our school community and work closely with us to create The Hudson School leadership opportunity statement.  (More Information about EC, their work in the field and the experience that Marcus and Jayne bring to the process can be found on the EC website.)

In the coming weeks, there will be important opportunities for faculty, staff, parents, alumni and students to participate in the search for our new Head of School. Marcus and Jayne will visit The Hudson School on May 11 and May 12.  They will meet in small groups or in open forums during their two-day visit.  In addition to their campus visit, Marcus and Jayne will conduct a confidential on-line survey of faculty, staff, parents and alumni as well as of students.  Their goal is to determine what opportunities and challenges lie ahead for THS and to be sure that everyone has an opportunity to articulate the strengths of THS, areas for growth and improvement, and the qualities and attributes we are collectively seeking in our next Head of School.  Please, mark your calendars and stay tuned for scheduling details so you can participate in the process.

All of this feedback will be compiled and reported back to the Search Committee to inform the process of finding the ideal candidate to bring forward to meet our entire community in the fall.

We are committed to a search process that is as open and transparent as possible so that all members of our community are heard, respected and informed.  The entire search committee is excited and energized to move forward with the important work of finding the next Head of School for THS, and we are grateful for your participation and support.  Please do not hesitate to contact us at if you have any questions.
