Forty middle and upper Hudson School students take on the challenge of Meredith Willson’s American Songbook classic for two weekends in April. Harold Hill is an unabashed swindler who’s come to fleece the folks of River City, Iowa in 1912. His scam is selling the good citizens of River City musical instruments, uniforms, and specialized instruction books while promising to teach the kids music and to form a band. Harold hasn’t any musical training, and his plan always includes escaping town at the last minute once he’s collected all the money. Everything goes along as usual until he meets the town’s real music teacher and librarian- Marian Paroo. Marian proves to be just the challenge he has actually been searching for. A con man’s job is figuring out what people yearn for and tricking them into giving him something on their way to fulfilling their dreams on their own. Both Harold Hill and River City are transformed through the power of community.
