In 1978, Suellen Newman and a group of Hoboken educators opened The Hudson School’s doors to 18 middle school students and six teachers. Today, 280 students across two campuses continue that original vision.

In the fall of 1978, The Hudson School opened at 506 Park Ave with 18 middle school students and six teachers. Founder Suellen Newman envisioned a school that would open new windows on the world for its students and teachers: constantly challenging ethnocentric views, encouraging intellectual risk-taking, and fostering appreciation of the rich cultural diversity found in an urban setting. Her founding conviction: that what children learn should have a genuine relationship to what society will demand of them as adults.
A holistic approach, then and now.
From the beginning, The Hudson School’s founders believed that education should nurture the whole child: intellectually, creatively, socially, and ethically. Small class sizes for personalized attention, integration of arts and academics, an emphasis on critical thinking over rote memorization, and strong partnerships between school and families have defined the Hudson experience for forty-six years. Those commitments are as central today as they were in 1978.
