Theatre and Performance Arts in Education: Cultivating Confidence and Creativity
By Ryan Carbone, Strategic Communications Manager

Are you seeking an educational environment that fosters creativity, confidence and self-expression in your child? At The Hudson School (THS), we recognize the profound impact of theatre and performance arts on shaping well-rounded individuals.

How can these disciplines play a pivotal role in your child's development? According to a report from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education, students who participate in theatre arts tend to have higher grade point averages, better attendance record and improved language and communication skills compared to their non-theatre peers. Additionally, theatre arts can also develop problem-solving skills, which are beneficial in academic and other areas of life.

As students engage and hone skills in performing arts, many discover a lifelong passion that extends far beyond their education years.  While the arts are sometimes perceived as “soft” economy drivers, real economic opportunities do exist. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the arts is projected to grow by 4% from 2024 through 2032, aligning with the average growth rate for all occupations. Additionally, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the industry has reached a historic high, surpassing $1 trillion in value.

Through THS’s integrated curriculum and extracurricular activities, we offer unique opportunities for students to explore their creativity, build confidence and cultivate essential life skills.

Embracing the Stage: From Classroom to Spotlight

In our commitment to holistic education, theatre and performance arts are seamlessly integrated into our curriculum at every level. From interactive classroom activities to full-scale productions, students are encouraged to explore the world of theatre and express themselves creatively.

Nurturing Young Talent

In the Middle School, students have the opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity through annual productions. From classic plays like The Inspector General to Greek skits, students immerse themselves in the world of theatre, honing their acting skills and building confidence on stage.

"Our recent production of The Inspector General was a testament to the dedication and talent of our students. Through weeks of rehearsals and collaborative teamwork, they brought the characters to life and captivated the audience with their performances," shares Viv Hasbouk, Performing Arts Department Chair.

Senior Projects: A Platform for Creative Expression

For our graduating seniors, the senior project offers a unique opportunity to explore their passion for theatre and performance arts. Recent graduate Mircea Florescu showcased his talent by performing a two-person play called "Red" alongside Acting & Music Teacher, Adam Sentoni, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

"Senior projects like Mircea's 'Red' exemplify the transformative power of theatre in education. Through dedication, creativity, and hard work, students not only hone their acting skills but also develop essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, and resilience," reflects Mr. Sentoni.

All-School Productions: Celebrating Creativity and Collaboration

In addition to Middle School productions, The Hudson School also hosts All-School Productions that bring together students from all grade levels. Under the guidance of Ms. Hasbrouk, last year's production of Alice in the Upside Down captivated audiences with its imaginative storytelling and vibrant performances. This year, we are excited to present Rosie & The Radium Girls, a poignant story that highlights the power of resilience and solidarity.

"Our All-School Productions are a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community. Through rehearsals, students not only develop their acting skills but also forge lifelong friendships and memories that will last a lifetime," says Ms. Hasbrouk.

Upper School Plays: Exploring Complex Themes

In the Upper School, students delve into more complex themes and narratives through annual productions. Last year's production of Proof, directed by Mr. Sentoni, challenged audiences to confront issues of identity, family, and mental illness with sensitivity and depth.

"Upper School plays offer students the opportunity to engage with thought-provoking themes and narratives that resonate with their own experiences and perspectives. Through performances like Proof, students not only develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them but also hone their artistic skills and craft," explains Mr. Sentoni.

From Theatre to a Lifetime of Real-World Impact

In conclusion, theatre and performance arts play a vital role in education, fostering creativity, confidence and self-expression in students. At THS, we are committed to providing students with opportunities to explore their passion for theatre, develop essential life skills and unleash their full potential on and off the stage.

As we continue to celebrate the transformative power of theatre, we invite our students to embrace their creativity, express themselves authentically, and shine brightly in the spotlight.

Through theatre and performance arts, we empower students to become confident, creative and compassionate individuals who are ready to make a positive impact on the world around them.
